University of Limerick cycle way – Proposed bridge to cut it off

Limerck Council have submitted planning permission “to build a new canal bridge to provide two-way traffic flow between Canal Bank, Park Road and Lower Park Road, Limerick.” The proposal can be viewed on Register there and make a submission or simple observation.

The proposal is to cut off the current Smarter Travel cycle way that connect the university with the city (and its new city campus), and build a road through it instead. This would discourage people from cycling to Castletroy, thus encouraging more people back into their cars, and adding to traffic for the people who do need to drive.

The proposed roadway will cut off cycling between the University of Limerick and its new city campus.

The proposed roadway will encourage additional traffic through the Rhebogue slow zone, under this following bridge, where local children walk on the shared road space to St Patrick’s School on Dublin Road:

Again, the proposal can be viewed on There, you can register and make a submission or observation. An observation can be as simple as “We need pedestrian priority, then cycle priority, and lastly private motor traffic. I cycle here and otherwise I may not bother, and I’ll start driving again.” Deadline for submissions is 3rd Feb 2020.
